(Contributors: Levan Karsaulidze and Abdulrahman Gweder)

Growth in World Industrial Production (IP) decelerated in May following a rise in April. World Industrial Production increased marginally, 0.1 percent month-on-month in May, after a 0.6 percent rise in the previous month.

The modest growth was driven entirely by Emerging Market and Developing Economies (EMDEs) with a 0.2 percent increase following a 1.1 percent rise in the previous month. Emerging and Developing Europe increased by 1.2 percent reversing a 1.2 percent decline in the prior month. The Middle East and Central Asia experienced growth for the third consecutive month, with a 0.9 percent increase, contributing 0.1 percentage points to the global IP growth. IP in Sub-Saharan Africa rose by 0.2 percent with a marginal contribution to total growth. In contrast IP declined in Advanced Economies and in Emerging and Developing Asia by 0.1 and 0.2 percent, respectively. Across the Americas there was general weakness with the US declining 0.2 percent, Canada increasing slightly (+0.1 percent) with a more moderate pace in Latin America and the Caribbean (+0.3 percent rise).

On a year over year basis, world IP rose by 3.1 percent in May. EMDEs registered a 3.9 percent increase, while IP in Advanced economies recorded a 1.0 percent growth.
