IMF Currency Composition of Official Foreign Exchange Reserves, World Aggregates, Fourth Quarter of 2025

Contributors: Erin Nephew, Huong Lan Vu and Hannah Wei

The latest IMF’s Currency Composition of Official Foreign Exchange Reserves (COFER) survey results show that total foreign exchange reserves increased to $13.14 trillion in 2025Q4, up slightly from $13.03 trillion in 2025Q3.

The share of US dollar holdings decreased to 56.77 percent in 2025Q4, from 56.93 percent in 2025Q3.

The share of euro holdings decreased to 20.25 in 2025Q4, from 20.36 percent in 2025Q3.

The share of Chinese renminbi holdings increased to 1.95 percent in 2025Q4 from 1.92 percent in the previous quarter.

The share of other currencies individually identified in COFER—including the Japanese yen, Pound sterling, Australian dollar, Canadian dollar, and Swiss franc altogether—edged down to 14.90 percent in 2025Q4 from 15.18 percent in 2025Q3.

Meanwhile, the residual “other currencies” category—covering currencies not separately identified in COFER—increased to 6.13 percent in 2025Q4 from 5.61 percent in 2025Q3. Though still small in absolute terms, the share of unidentified “other currencies” began increasing in 2021 and has since more than doubled.

Exchange rate valuation effects, which played a significant role in past quarters, were muted in 2025Q4.

The share of total reserves for which the currency composition was imputed was 10.75 percent in 2025Q4.
