(Contributors: Levan Karsaulidze, Abdulrahman Gweder and Arushi Kapoor)

Seasonally adjusted global merchandise exports decreased 1.8 percent month-on-month in January, following a decrease of 0.3 percent in December 2024. The decline was mainly attributable to a 3.8 percent decrease in exports from the Emerging Market and Developing Economies (EMDE). Demand for goods from Emerging and Developing Asia (-6.2 percent), Emerging and Developing Europe (-3.0 percent), Middle East and Central Asia (-2.2 percent), and in Sub-Saharan Africa was particularly weak. The decline in exports among Advanced Economies (AE) was more muted, dropping -1.5 percent and contributing -0.2 percentage points to the total change. Exports increased 4.2 percent across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Exports decreased -2.0 percent year-on-year in January 2025, where EMDEs and AEs experienced declines of 2.9 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively.
